Fireworks, flags, and cookouts — can you guess which holiday we’re describing? That’s right, it’s Independence Day!
It’s a day that most Americans look forward to, as we’re not only celebrating our freedom, but also our nation. Our enthusiasm translates into myriad celebrations, many of which are senior-friendly.
So don’t worry this year, as there’s definitely holiday fun for seniors, especially if you live in Newton, NC. We’ve put together a list of July 4th events in the city and in nearby towns so you have a good idea of what summer events for aging adults are available.
Independence Day Community Parade in Downtown Newton
First of all, there’s a possible community parade right here in Downtown Newton. While the exact date and time haven’t been announced yet, the city held this parade in 2023, so there’s a chance it’ll happen again in 2025.
Back in 2023, this parade occurred on Saturday, July 1st. Its location was around the 1924 Courthouse Square, and participants were welcome from all walks of life. If it’s not too late for you to put together an entry, then we encourage you to register if the parade happens (it cost $10 in 2023)! The most patriotic display was awarded Downtown Dollars, which you can spend at participating merchants.
Since this festive parade is designed for all ages, it’s one of our top things to do for senior-friendly holidays.
Streetscape Celebration
Downtown Newton is hosting a special Streetscape Celebration, which commemorates the completion of the Downtown Newton Streetscape Revitalization project. It’s not quite a July 4th celebration since it’s happening on the 10th, but it’s still a celebration nonetheless!
During this free community event, you can explore the downtown area and enjoy free hot dogs. You can also purchase limited-edition Downtown Newton art prints as keepsakes.
After the celebration, there’s Music on Main, which is a free summer concert series. It’s at the Frank & Sue Jones Amphitheatre, and the music starts at 6:00 pm. As far as memory care celebrations go, this one’s pretty easy-going. It’s not strenuous, and walking around Downtown Newton and listening to good music may jog some memories.
Historic Fourth of July in Lincolnton
In nearby Lincolnton, they’re also having their own celebration. This year’s information hasn’t been released yet, but last year, their event ran from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm in Historic Downtown Lincolnton.
Participants decorated various moving items with patriotic themes, such as:
- Bikes
- Trikes
- Golf carts
- Walkers
- Cars
- Trucks
- Tractors
- Floats
The celebration first starts with a street party, where there are food and treat vendors. The parade then goes on, and then there’s a spectacular fireworks show at the end.
If you want to participate in the parade, then you’ll be glad to know that it’s free. However, they do require you to submit an entry application.
City of Lenoir Fireworks Show
Lenoir is another nearby city you can drive to if you want to participate in the July 4th celebrations. This one’s good to attend if you’re busy on the day itself, as Lenoir’s holding their fireworks show on July 5th instead (the company that normally provides the show couldn’t do it on the 4th this year).
This free fireworks show will go off at 9:30 pm at the Lenoir Optimist Park. Do note that Mulberry Street (in front of Mulberry Recreation Center) will be closed at around 5:00 pm in preparation for the show, so plan accordingly.
As for parking, you can park in these areas:
- Waterlife Church
- CubeSmart
- Quest4Life
If you find free spaces in any other public parking area, then you can use those too.
Lake Junaluska Independence Day Celebration
Lake Junaluska is holding one of the biggest and longest celebrations in the area, so if you’re an enthusiast, don’t miss out! Their celebration runs from June 29th until July 5th, so you have plenty of time to join in.
The lake has a full schedule of activities waiting for you. Examples include:
- Concerts
- Floating lanterns
- Swimming
- Golfing
- Cruises
You can always make a mini-vacation of your visit by booking nearby accommodations.
If you’re only interested in fireworks, then do note that they occur on Thursday, July 3rd at 9:15 pm.
Lake Norman Symphony in the Park and Fireworks
Lake Norman is hosting a wonderful time with live music performed by the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra at the Bailey Road Park Bandshell. This is one of the best patriotic activities in assisted living you can do, as it’s not physically demanding, and you can revel in amazing performances by a top-notch orchestra.
This event does happen two weeks early on June 21st. The gates and KidsZone open at 6:00 pm, and there are concessions so you can have some tasty food, as well as beer and wine.
The KidsZone closes at 8:00 pm, and then the orchestra performs at 8:30 pm. Afterward, you’ll enjoy a fireworks show at 9:45 pm!
Fourth of July in Banner Elk
Another town that’s close by and has July 4th events is Banner Elk. They have an annual Independence Day parade, and it’s an early one at 11:00 am. This means that you can catch this parade and still have time to do the other activities on this list!
All along Main Street, you’ll see floats, bikes, cars, and people parade down with American pride. Afterward, there will be a party in the park, where you can see exciting duck races. It’s a fantastic event that’s family-friendly too, so feel free to bring your loved ones.
Which July 4th Events Will You Attend?
Newton’s not a very big town, but there are still July 4th events you can attend. Plus, surrounding towns like Lincolnton and Lenoir have their own celebrations, so you can spread out your fun and have an exciting day!
Don’t forget to wear weather-appropriate clothes and to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. Scope out shaded areas with benches beforehand, and you’ll be in a good position to celebrate without wearing yourself out.
