A great way to show pride for the USA is to celebrate the 4th of July. According to the State Policy Network, around 87% of Americans make plans to celebrate Independence Day. From backyard BBQs to nearby events, there’s no shortage of things to do to celebrate this holiday.
Myrtle Beach offers the ideal family-friendly atmosphere for seniors and their families to have fun on the Fourth. There are countless July 4th events to choose from, no matter how you choose to party. Families can make memories together while seniors get some much-needed family time.
This blog will talk about some of the patriotic celebrations you can partake in this upcoming holiday. Make the most of summer holiday fun by exploring some of these Myrtle Beach activities.
Fireworks Shows: The Main Attraction
Did you know that many historians believe that fireworks were invented in Ancient China in the second century BC? The original fireworks are a bit different than what we typically see today. The Chinese would throw bamboo stalks into a fire, waiting until they exploded.
Setting off fireworks to observe the Fourth of July has been a tradition since the first celebration of Independence Day in 1777. Cannons fired a 13-gun salute in honor of the 13 colonies. Despite their humble beginnings, patriotic fireworks shows have evolved from there, and Myrtle Beach is no exception.
Cherry Grove Pier Fireworks
The city of North Myrtle Beach is hosting a free fireworks show on the Cherry Grove Pier. Some things to keep in mind if you want to head to this event include:
- The fireworks start at 9:30 PM and will end at 10:00 PM
- Check the tide chart to determine where you want to sit
- There will be closed roads and different traffic patterns to accommodate the large crowd
With some planning ahead and careful driving, the fireworks show at the Cherry Grove Pier may be a great option for you and your family.
Broadway at the Beach Fireworks Show
Broadway at the Beach is celebrating the patriotic season by hosting five nights of fireworks starting on June 30 and culminating on July 4. This extensive patriotic celebration is to honor the 30th birthday of Broadway. Each firework show will start at 10 PM.
Broadway at the Beach is a popular destination in Myrtle Beach, so be sure to plan accordingly if you want to see their fireworks show. There are plenty of other summer holiday fun activities to participate in at Broadway on the Beach, including:
- Broadway Theater
- Dino Park
- Ben & Jerrys
- Boardwalk Winery
This is a great option if you’re celebrating with your grandchildren or great-grandchildren. There are plenty of activities to keep family members of every age entertained.
Parades and Patriotic Spectacles
While initial celebrations of Independence Day began with modest celebrations, festivities have evolved to include more grandiose activities, including parades. Many parades feature civic groups and military bands to reflect the United States’ identity.
Murrells Inlet Boat Parade
If you’re looking for unique July 4th events, check out the Murrells Inlet Boat Parade. This parade features boats decorated in patriotic colors, which creates a colorful and vibrant spectacle along Murrells Inlet Marshwalk.
What’s great about this parade is that it winds along the inlet before ending at Morse Park Landing. This gives you plenty of places to gather with your family while cheering on your favorite boat.
Surfside Beach Golf Cart Parade
If you want to kick your patriotic activities up a notch, head over to Surfside Beach to check out their Golf Cart Parade. Parade participants decorate their golf carts in festive colors while gently throwing candy at parade watchers. Spectators are encouraged to dress up as festively as possible as well.
Salute From the Shore
Salute From the Shore is a way for beachgoers to honor our country’s armed forces with a military flyover. Starting at Shaw Air Force base at 1 PM, F-16s will start flying down the coastline from Cherry Grove to Beaufort. Once the military flyover is finished, a volunteer brigade of Warbirds and civilian-owned vintage planes will follow the same route.
Daytime Activities and Community Gatherings
There are many tranquil and low-key July 4th events for you to participate in if you’re looking for something that’s a slower pace. These activities provide you with a festive environment despite being more low-key than other celebrations.
The Market Common
The Market Common is a popular outdoor shopping district that decorates for the Fourth of July. Here are some things to keep in mind if you want to attend this event:
- Shaded patios
- Local boutiques
- Family-friendly dining
Brookgreen Gardens
Brookgreen Gardens is the perfect spot to take a stroll. You can unwind in the lush gardens while taking in the natural beauty of your surroundings.
Planning for July 4th Events for Seniors
Independence Day in Myrtle Beach is an exciting time, but it may be overwhelming for some seniors. It’s important to plan so you enjoy every second you have.
Some of the things you’ll want to pack include:
- Sunscreen
- Water
- Snacks
- Seating
- Comfortable shoes
- Beach towels
- Umbrellas
- Bathing suit
While you may think you’ll be hot while out celebrating, you’ll want to bring light layers and a blanket if you plan on staying out after dark. Talk with whatever family member is transporting you to the event to make sure you both understand the parking situation. Look for areas where you can get safely dropped off so you don’t overextend yourself by walking too far in the heat.
