It’s common for senses to fade with age, and it’s nothing to worry about if the change is not particularly concerning. The most common example is that of eyesight. As you get older, you may find yourself needing glasses where you never needed them before. Despite this, there are some ways to preserve sensors that fate and compensate for any losses that you may already have gone through. We share more with you in this article!
Sight
Did you know that your pupils shrink with age? By the time you are 60, they are typically only 1/3 the size of what they were in your 20s! The result is that you may find it harder to see in dim light and it can also be harder to focus on words while reading and doing close work. Conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts can also become more common.
However, it’s not all bad news. By making a few small changes around the house, you can preserve your eyesight for longer. This includes installing brighter lighting throughout your living space, getting the right prescription glasses as well as going for frequent eye exams.
Hearing
If you find yourself having more trouble hearing as you age, you are not alone. One main reason older adults may experience a degree of hearing loss is the exposure to loud noises over a prolonged period. Another common reason is the regular wear and tear that happens on the nerve cells of your inner ear.
While you may not be able to reverse hearing loss that is age-related, there are certain steps you can take to allow yourself to hear better. This includes getting hearing aids and filtering out background noises.
Taste
Are you someone who absolutely lives for mealtimes? If so, you may have noticed that your taste buds have become less sensitive as you age. While this is a normal occurrence after your 50s, it can be worsened by smoking. You may also experience a temporary loss of taste due to colds and other respiratory infections.
No doubt it can be tempting to add extra salt to your food as your taste buds start to dull. However, this is not the best option for your health as it can lead to a higher blood pressure. Instead of salt and sugar, consider spicing up your food with herbs instead. You will be surprised at the number of possibilities this can open up!
