Why do so many of us lose the sense of joy and wonder that came so naturally with youth? As children, we experienced all sorts of things for the first time. With a little effort, we can rekindle that spark for life.
The science of novelty reveals that engaging in new activities causes the release of feel-good neurotransmitters like dopamine. In an assisted living community like TerraBella Northridge, new activities are always on the calendar!
What are some of our favorite activities for seniors in assisted living? Read on to find out what activities we plan to ignite good old-fashioned happiness in our seniors.
Live Performances
We love bringing a diverse array of musicians and actors to our assisted living community to perform for our residents. We also make it easy for residents to buy tickets and attend live performances in Raleigh.
Watching a talented artist perform can leave you feeling exhilarated, inspired, and connected. Even a familiar performance becomes new when you’re witnessing the improvisations and personal touches that an artist brings to the stage.
Arts and Crafts Classes
If there’s one thing every child is born with, it’s creativity. Over time, we may lose touch with our creativity as we’re bogged down with responsibilities and routines. Guided arts and crafts classes allow seniors to reengage with their creative side.
From landscape painting to beading to embroidery, we provide residents with a variety of artistic opportunities. Not only do many of our residents find it relaxing to indulge in a crafty hobby, but the final product often leaves them with a sense of accomplishment.
Guest Lectures
At TerraBella, we believe that you don’t have to be enrolled in school to be a student. Learning knows no age, and guest lectures offer the perfect opportunity to expand your knowledge.
Maybe you want to learn more about native plants or local history. Perhaps you’d be interested in taking a closer look at senior nutrition and health. We do our best to book guest lecturers that reflect the interests of our residents.
Visits to Local Restaurants
It’s hard to beat the feeling of breaking bread with your friends and neighbors. Not only does our Sensations dining club offer three meals a day, but we also plan group trips to local eateries each month.
Trying a new cuisine or visiting an establishment you’ve never been to before is a great way to add novelty to your life. Plus, by visiting local restaurants, we get to give back to the wider Raleigh community.
Community Outings
Going out to eat isn’t the only time we make group trips off campus. With the city of Raleigh outside our front door, there’s no shortage of exciting things to do.
Whether you love a shopping spree, a day in the park, or a visit to historical sites, we have outings for you. You can kick back and relax while we make all the arrangements, including transportation.
Exercise Programs
According to the CDC, people over the age of 65 should aim to get 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week. This should include a balance of aerobics, strength training, and movement that promotes balance.
As part of our Dimensions Health and Wellness program, we host a variety of exercise classes each week. With choices like dancing, yoga, and personal training, you can easily achieve your fitness goals and have fun doing it.
TV and Movie Nights
Each of our residential apartments has cable and WiFi access. That means that you can enjoy your favorite TV shows and movies from the comfort of your home and at your leisure.
You’ll also have the opportunity to enjoy classic and contemporary shows and movies with your neighbors. We love hosting TV and movie nights and are always open to requests.
Game Nights
What if you’re looking for active engagement and friendly competition? Our residents love to spend the evening playing games together.
Enjoy the spirited atmosphere of the good old-fashioned bingo hall or learn the rules of the newest board game. In your downtime, challenge a neighbor to a game of chess or checkers. Few things are more fun than playing games; our game nights are a resident favorite.
Holiday Parties
As a child, it was hard to resist the excitement and intrigue of the holidays. At TerraBella, we keep that excitement alive through community holiday parties. We embrace old traditions and make new ones with the help of our staff and residents.
We’ve also found that there’s a reason to celebrate every day! In addition to celebrating major holidays, we make time to enjoy the little things, like National Ice Cream Day.
Religious Services
Our residents have diverse religious backgrounds, and we do our best to accommodate that. For many, spirituality is a key component of emotional and mental wellness.
If we don’t offer a religious service that meets your needs, we may be able to organize transportation to a local congregation.
Family Events
New research shows that quality family ties positively impact family elders. Whether your family is near or far, they’re always welcome to join in the fun at TerraBella.
Many of our activities are family-friendly, though you may have to inform us that you have family coming. We also offer two-bedroom floor plans that make it easy for family members to extend their visit. We can even help you plan family celebrations both on-site and out in Raleigh, one of the best cities in America.
