Consider the following information from Bankrate: it’s reported that 21.8% of drivers fall into the “senior” category. This percentage is relatively low, which begs the question, “How are seniors getting around Charleston, SC?”
One of the best ways for the elderly to move around town is with Ubers for seniors. Lyft is another great option, and these rideshare services allow seniors to maintain their independence and improve mobility as they travel.
But how do ride-hailing services work for older adults? This article explains the ins and outs of senior ride services.
CARTA OnDemand
CARTA OnDemand is available to seniors aged 55 and over. This pilot partnership program strives to work with rideshare companies, servicing seniors in a fixed route. It also works to service Tel-A-Ride customers, partnering with Uber and Lyft.
Any approved seniors can receive up to $21 discounted from any trip. These trips require a voucher and are good for same-day service. Cash isn’t accepted.
Seniors who frequently travel will benefit from 20 monthly trips, provided it’s in a specific area on a fixed route.
Ride-Hailing for the Elderly
Ride-hailing is excellent when transportation options for seniors are needed. This one-way transportation service is available as needed – and last minute (although there may be wait times depending on availability).
Seniors benefit from reliable transportation to doctor’s appointments, social visits, attending events on their activity calendar, and more. But this requires a ride-hailing program that does what it claims. The most notable ridesharing companies are Uber and Lyft.
When selecting the best safe rides for seniors, however, ensure that they have access to a smartphone, credit card, PayPal, and a cell phone app for either rideshare provider.
What About Seniors Without Smartphones?
Depending on a senior’s financial status, they may qualify for free or reduced-fee cell phones through Life Wireless. This is traditionally through government-assisted programs. Veterans may also qualify for these services if they need a phone.
Uber for Seniors
Seniors who use Uber more than 20 times a month can still benefit from this rideshare program. To secure their own Uber ride, seniors only need to visit Uber’s website, select a time, and choose a destination. Before doing any of this, however, they need to create an account and have a credit card available to pay with.
Sometimes friends and family members help seniors secure rides. In this instance, they only need to use their Uber app to reserve their senior loved ones a ride around town.
Uber doesn’t have a distance limit, per se, making it easy for older adults to come and go as they please, visiting friends and family or traveling recreationally.
Uber Discounts
Although there aren’t specific Uber discounts, the rideshare company offers something called Uber One. This membership program offers some great benefits, especially for seniors. For example, seniors with this plan can enjoy:
- $0 delivery fees, provided they purchase eligible food, groceries, and more
- Zero cancellation fees should they decide to opt out of the program
- The possibility of saving money when shopping in stores and dining in restaurants
Anyone with an Uber One membership can also benefit from 6% Uber Cash when they take eligible rides places and the possibility of 10% (maximum) off from qualifying deliveries and orders for pickup.
Interested seniors would pay $10/month.
Senior Uber alternatives: Lyft
Like Uber, Lyft helps seniors retain their independence and travel. It offers a discount to seniors (and low-income families) and takes them to get fresh food and more.
Other places Lyft offers discounted rides include:
- SNAP benefits
- Farmer’s Markets
- Food pantries
Lyft and Uber are both priced similarly. Both enhance senior living options, helping older adults to travel freely despite driving restrictions.
Staying Safe With Rideshare Programs
It’s reported that elderly victims are linked to $77.7 billion worth of worldwide fraud (Nasdaq). This means it’s more important than ever for seniors to protect themselves while using rideshare programs.
When getting in a rideshare vehicle, seniors should refrain from giving drivers their first name. This can easily lead to fraud if anyone but their actual rideshare driver picks them up. Additionally, never say the driver’s name first – let them tell you.
According to the APH Connect Center, visually impaired seniors – or anyone looking to take precautions – should ask drivers to reiterate information from the app so you know they’re legitimate.
Sit in the backseat to maintain distance, especially if you have any type of medical issues. For your comfort and safety, don’t be afraid to ask driers to wear masks. When the driver asks for your destination, ask what the app says your destination is – this works to ensure your driver is indeed the one scheduled and not someone fraudulently trying to pick you up.
Refrain from telling your driver private information and consider speaking on your cell phones while in the car, talking to someone about your location, where you were picked up (and by whom), and where you’re going.
Always keep your wallet in your pocket or pocketbook. You should never provide a cash tip, as everything is covered by booking apps.
Lost Items
After your ride, you may have realized you lost an item. Using your app’s Lost & Found menu options, check to see if your belongings were left in your rideshare vehicle.
If they were, the rideshare company you worked with will contact your driver so you can meet up and get your belongings back.
Ubers for Seniors and Other Rideshare Services
Ubers for seniors helps older adults retain their independence. Seniors who might otherwise not leave their homes can travel at a reduced rate and enjoy discounted programs.
