Many elderly people have ongoing or chronic health conditions. Some of these can include high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and arthritis. They also may be more prone to the development of cognitive issues and have problems executing daily activities like bathing, walking, and dressing.
As we age, we should all do our best to stay physically and mentally healthy. Here, we are going to detail some healthy tips for women over 50.
Brain Exercises
To help keep your loved one’s brain sharp, exercise it whenever possible. Some ways of doing this include jigsaw puzzles, number puzzles, word puzzles, reading, and more. Doing these in groups is also a great way to socialize. Consider learning a new language, as well.
Body Exercises
Whatever level of exercise the body can tolerate, that is what your loved one should do. Even just walking for 30 to 45 minutes per day will be better than sitting on the couch. If your loved one has mobility problems, consider sit-and-be-fit programs, yoga, simple stretching, etc.
Drinking and Smoking Recommendations
If your loved one smokes, they should quit. If they drink alcohol, do so responsibly and in limited amounts.
Always Use Sunscreen
Even if it’s a cloudy day, if your loved one is going out, always use sunscreen, all year long. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses as well.
Lower Risk of Fractures and Falls
Keep bones and muscles strong with the right kinds of vitamins and supplements. Keep them limber by exercising on a regular basis.
Vaccinations
Consider the following vaccinations:
- COVID-19 and boosters
- Shingles
- Tetanus
- Pneumonia (two of them)
- Flu shot
Health Screening
Consider getting screened for the following:
- Diabetes check
- Colorectal cancer
- Blood pressure check
- High cholesterol levels
- Depression screening
- Bone health evaluation
- Dental checkups
- Vision and hearing screening
- STDs
Supplements, Vitamins, and Medications
The next time your loved one visits the doctor, make sure they bring all of the supplements, herbs, vitamins, and medicines. These may not all get along with each other. Always explore side effects of both prescribed medications and supplements before taking them. Always take prescribed medications as instructed.
“Rainbow” Eating
Go for fewer calories and be sure to eat healthy foods as you age. Keep the following in mind:
- Choose healthier fats
- Get enough vitamin D and calcium
- Opt for fish that are heart-healthy
- Stay away from unhealthy fatty foods and enjoy more fiber-rich foods
- Include a “rainbow” variety of colorful vegetables and fruits
Possibly most important of all, for a checkup at least once a year.
