History of Maiden, NC
There are many stories about how Maiden came to be named. It is agreed that the town got its name from Maiden Creek, but history doesn’t tell exactly how the creek came to be named. One explanation is that the creek received its name from maiden ladies who lived along its banks. However, no one knew who they were or where they lived.
Pioneer James Caldwell came into this area and settled at the stream’s head springs. At that time, there was a species of bushy and short cane known as Maiden Cane. This cane was plentiful along this stream, so Caldwell claims that the creek was named for this cane.
No matter its origin, the name Maiden was chosen over Shrumtown, Carpenterville, and others. While people are not sure about the name’s origin, it is certain that Maiden’s origin was created for a purpose. It was meant to be a cotton mill site, as well as a trading center.
