On May 1, different cultures around the world come together as one to celebrate May Day. The day has unique significance across various cultures, but it is most commonly known as a celebration of spring. May is a month of renewal – a time of blossoming flowers, sprouting plants and animals emerging from hibernation. Such a wonderful day of rebirth, life and unity must be celebrated with your loved ones! There are so many special ways you can celebrate May Day – young and seniors alike!
Leave a Flower Basket at Their Doorstep
Flowers are an essential part of May Day. A classic tradition is to leave an anonymous flower basket at someone’s front door. Wouldn’t it be nice to let your senior friends know that you are thinking of them? Your flower basket will surely brighten up their homes; reminding them of the beauty that can be found in nature!
An easy way to make a simple May Day basket would be to fold a cone out of colored paper, then fill it with wildflowers. Decorate the cone by drawing on it with spring colors! You can also choose to spice up this classic tradition by including little gifts – such as some fruit, homemade cookies, candies, flower seed packets, or a hand-made card – in a real basket. Go the extra mile by decorating it with colored tissue or bright streamers.
Make Flower Crowns Together
Celebrating spring naturally involves the picking and gifting of flowers. Put a twist on this classic tradition by crafting something new out of nature. All you’ll need is florists tape, wire, scissors, string and flowers of your choice. This is a great opportunity for you to spend time together with your loved ones and get those creative juices flowing. At the end of it, you will all have something that you can call your own. If you’re not sure what flowers to include, opt for a combination of roses, chrysanthemum and gerberas, as well as your favorite flower.
Decorate Your Homes
On May Day, it’s common practice in Britain to gather cuttings of flowering trees, and put them in your homes. Head outside to look for any flowering branches you can find: magnolia, lilac, daffodils, or wildflowers are all excellent options! This is usually known as ‘Bringing in the May”. Craft beautiful floral arrangements out of new green growth – for a cheerful reminder of spring!
Immerse Yourself in the Outdoors
There is no better way to appreciate spring than observing the beauty of the outdoors! Plan a leisurely excursion to the outdoors for yourself and your loved ones. You can take a relaxing walk in nature together by heading to a neighboring park or garden. Or, opt for something less physical, such as a breezy picnic together on someone’s grassy lawn. Nature and its beauty can be found and appreciated everywhere!
