The McDowell Nature Preserve is a natural area located in Huntersville, North Carolina. It is situated on 5,200 acres of land and includes a variety of habitats such as old-growth forests and wetlands.
The preserve was established in 1980s by the town of Huntersville as part of efforts to preserve open spaces in the area. The property was purchased using funds from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), which allows towns and counties to purchase lands for conservation purposes with grants from the federal government.

The lake has over 300 miles of shoreline and over 15,000 acres filled with water from natural springs, rivers, and creeks along its borders.
Lake Norman offers visitors an abundance of activities, including camping at several campgrounds along the lake’s shores, such as Camp Latham Cove or Cliffside Campground; hiking trails such as Hanging Rock State Park’s trails; boating through channels such as Shocco Springs Channel, which connects directly into Mountain Island Lake or Paynetown Creek Channel.
