Cowpens National Battlefield
For those interested in knowing more about American history, the Cowpens National Battlefield is a National Park Service unit located east of Chesnee, South Carolina, near the North Carolina state line, that preserves a significant battlefield from the American Revolutionary War.
You can head down to the visitor center where they feature exhibits on the American Revolution and its battle, which includes a fiber-optic map depicting the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution, a reconstructed cabin of Robert Scruggs, who farmed the land prior to the park’s establishment, and a tour of the battlefield.
Gaffney Residential Historic District
If you are interested in Victorian and Bungalow-style houses, you should definitely visit the Gaffney Residential Historic Districts! Located at Gaffney, Cherokee, South Carolina, the district includes 111 contributing structures in Gaffney’s largely residential area. The majority of the buildings date from around 1890 to 1930 and are made up of residences situated on large urban lots and facing wide, tree-lined streets.
The houses are represented by fine examples of brick or frame construction such as the Queen Anne, Neoclassical, and Colonial Revival.
Limestone Springs Historic District
This national historic district is located at the Limestone College, now known as Limestone University, campus in Gaffney, South Carolina. The campus is made up of nine buildings that were built between 1837 and 1941. The campus buildings are arranged around a central fountain and lawn. The buildings are classically influenced by Neoclassical and Gothic Revival architectural styles, as well as a meeting house-style church. The limestone quarry that was mined in the 19th and early 20th centuries is also part of the district.
Gaffney Commercial Historic District
Listed on the National Register of Historic places in 1986, this historic district includes 41 contributing buildings in Gaffney’s central business district. The majority of the buildings were constructed between 1900 and 1930, and are mostly commercial structures in vernacular commercial interpretations of the Romanesque Revival, Italianate, Art Deco, Renaissance Revival, and Neoclassical styles. The buildings are mostly made of brick and range in height from one to four floors. The downtown district, which remains a commercial hub in Gaffney, retains much of its early twentieth-century charm.
