When we grow older, our skin will change over time. In general, the skin will get drier due to the decrease in the production of natural oils and collagen. This can result in the way your makeup looks, so there’s a need to change up your skincare and makeup routine in order to accommodate this new skin type. According to professional makeup artists, we have accumulated a few tips and tricks on how to put your best face forward as you grow older. As such, here are some beauty tips for women over 50.
Hydration Is Your Best Friend
As mature skin tends to be dehydrated, you should always prioritize on moisturizing your skin and making it look and feel radiant and glowing. This can be achieved through applying a heavy or hydrating moisturizer, which is usually cream-based. Moisturizers should be applied for both day and night skincare routines to provide a good base and foundation. During the daytime, it’s important to prep well your skin for the makeup to sit on properly, so moisturizer helps to smooth out the skin, preventing makeup to sink into the fine lines. If the moisturizer is applied religiously every day, you’ll find that your skin will be less dehydrated and plumper.
Never Skip on Sunscreen
This applies not only to older women but also to young adults and children. Sunscreen should be applied every day and at all times, regardless of whether you’re staying indoors or the sun is not shining. As long as it’s during the daytime, sunscreen is a must to be applied in order to minimize the risk of skin cancer. The sun’s UVA and UVB rays are incredibly harmful to our skin, so sunscreen helps to deflect those rays and radiation. Ideally, you should specifically look for a sunscreen that is broad-spectrum and contains at least SPF35 for sufficient protection.
Certain Ingredients Are Preferred
When you’re looking for products, keep an eye out for a few ingredients. These ingredients are hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and antioxidants. The reason is that hyaluronic acid is a humectant, which draws moisture from the air and into the skin. Therefore, it is one of the most powerful and effective hydrator in the market. As the skin is more hydrated, it looks more youthful-looking. Vitamin C and other antioxidants are crucial as well due to their ability to protect the skin against damaging free radicals from the sun. If you’re facing issues of hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone, vitamin C is the solution for you.
Avoid Using Excessive Powder
While powder helps to set our makeup, they can settle into fine lines and wrinkles, and accentuate them. In order to prevent this, you should only apply powder lightly to key areas on the face, which are the T-zone, sides of the nose, and around the fine lines. These areas produce the most oil throughout the day, so powdering it can allow the makeup to last longer. We recommend going with finely milled loose powder as it gently sets the makeup and does not make fine lines as pronounced. Pressed powder should also be fine.
